so -1 squared =1....then take that result and subtract 3....so 1-3....which equals -2...and that result(-2) is cubed so we end up with -8 within the parenthesis. Now that the parenthesis are gone that (- )outside the parenthesis is applied to the result so we get -(-8) which is a positive 8. 8+5.5=13.5 which is you answer
