Question 17470: What is the area of a square patio that measures 9.5 m on each side? Found 3 solutions by whisper, askmemath, Alwayscheerful:Answer by whisper(27) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! The formula for the area of a square is x^2 where x is the side of the square.
In this case x = 9.5 m. So we find (9.5)^2 which is 90.25. Therefore the area of a square patio that measures 9.5m per side is 90.25 sq m.
Thank you. I do have one question though. And, please realize that I do not understand this at all. But, isn't 9.5^2 just finding two sides?
Hi!
Yes, it is finding the two sides and then multiplying them together. You
have a square which means that all sides are of equal length. We are told
that 9.5m is the length of a side so that all sides have to be of that
length. To find the area of a rectangle we take two sonsecutive sides times
each other. A square is a special rectangle which as I said above has sides
of equal length. So we take 9.5 * 9.5 or 9.5^2. And this gives us the
area.
The perimeter would be found be adding all four sides together.
Please don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions!
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Area of a square is SidexSide = Side^2
So we now have to find (9.5)^2
Here's a little trick for Squaring numbers ending in 5.
For the last 2 digits write down the square of 5 i.e. 25
Whatever the digit before 5( in this case 9) multiply that with the next highest number i.e. 10
So we get 9x10 = 90
Write this before 25 = 9025.
But we started with 9.5 i.e. 1 decimal place and we multiplied with a number containing 1 decimal place.Which means we have to count for 2 decimal places
So we get 90.25 sq metres
