eight times a number = 8x
twice the number = 2x
6 less than twice the number = 2x-6

eight times a number plus 6 less than twice the number = 8x + 2x -6
it is given,
eight times a number plus 6 less than twice the number is 34
therefore 8x + 2x -6 = 34

==> 10x -6 = 34
==> 10x = 34 + 6

==> 10x = 40


==> +10x%2F10+=+40%2F10

==> +x+=+4

so the number is 4
