Question 171948: My boyfriend and I were making up Algebra problems during a boring convention meal and ended up getting four different answers to this one. It seems we have forgotten the Order of Operations. (It's been a few years since either one of us was in school.) What is the solution to this equation? And, what is the order of operations?
7/4(6+6+6) = 30*4/3(5-6)X

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
7/[4(6+6+6)] = [30*4/3](5-6)x I will assume that this is the problem. It is important to use parentheses to avoid confusion otherwise you are foced to make assumptions.
7/(4*18)=40x(-1)
7/72 = -40x
x=-.002431

:
the left side of the = (6+6+6) is added first = 18....next 7 is divided by 4 then you multiply that answer by 18
so your left with 7(18)/4=31.5
:
the right side 5-6=-1...then 30*4=120 which is divided by 3 which is 40 which is multiplied by -1x.
:
(120/3)(-1)=-40x
so 31.5=-40x
:
x=31.5/-40=-.7875
