Suppose you read the average family in virgina has 2.41 children. What average is being used to describe the data? Explain
-------------------------
Average is an adjective referring to the number of children per family. It's an average number, nothing to do with an "average family", whatever that might be.
The statement should be rewritten, "Families in VA have an average of 2.41 children." Reporters and newspeople are mostly idiots and produce a lot of gibberish.
---------------------
It's the number of children divided by the number of families.
