You can put this solution on YOUR website!
lets call the # of quarters and dimes , q and d respectively.
:
.25q+.1d=11.45....eq 1
:
q=2d+5............eq 2
:
take q's value from eq 2 and plug it in eq 1
:
.25(2d+5)+.1d=11.45
:
.5d+1.25+.1d=11.45
:
.6d=10.20

Rosetta was paid 11.45 for babysitting the O'Connells. Mrs.O paid Rosetta in quarters and dimes. The # of quarters she recieved was five more than twice the number of dimes. How many of each coin did Rosetta receive?
---------------
Quantity Equation: q = 2d + 5
Vale EQUATION: 25q + 10d = 1145 cents
----------------------------------------
Rearrange:
25q - 50d = 125
25q + 10d = 1145
-----------------------
Subtract 1st from 2nd to get:
60d = 1020
d = 17 (# of dimes)
----------------------
Solve for q: q = 2*17+5 = 39 (# of quarters)
