Question 170243: I have a take home test and attempted all the problems, but following are a few that I need help with...
Solve for x.
problem #1
____x^2______ =
x^2 – 6x – 16
___16____
(x+8)(x–2)
I can get as far as;
____x^2___ =
(x-8)(x+2)
____16____
(x+8)(x-2)
but not sure what to do now...
problem #2
__x__ =
x^2-9
__1__
(x+3)
so far I have,
____x____ =
(x-3)(x+3)
__1__
(x+3)
then, I cross multiply, to get
x(x+3) =
(x-3)(x+3)
then, I subtract (x+3) from both sides to leave,
x = (x-3) right?
problem #3
[___3___ _._ __a__ ] + (a+1)
[(a^2-1) . (a+1) ]
first, I flip the second fraction to multiply...
[___3___ x _(a+1)_ ] + (a+1)
[(a^2-1) a ]
then, I cancel the "a in the second fraction and factor the two remaining fractios by the LCD to leave,
__3_+_(a+1)((a-1)(a+1))__
(a-1)(a+1)
then, I factor out the LCD to leave,
3+(a+1) right?
I don't know what #3 is, pls rewrite it using parentheses.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Solve for x.
problem #1
____x^2______ =
x^2 – 6x – 16
___16____
(x+8)(x–2)
I can get as far as;
____x^2___ =
(x-8)(x+2)
____16____
(x+8)(x-2)
but not sure what to do now...
-------------------
Do you mean Solve for x.
problem #1
____x^2______ =
x^2 – 6x – 16
___16____
(x+8)(x–2)
I can get as far as;
____x^2___ =
(x-8)(x+2)
____16____
(x+8)(x-2)
-------------
The DENs are the same, so x^2 = 16
x = +4, x = -4
--------------------------------------------
problem #2
__x__ =
x^2-9
__1__
(x+3)
so far I have,
____x____ =
(x-3)(x+3)
__1__
(x+3)
--------
Multiply thru by (x+3)
x/(x-3) = 1
x = x-3
That's inconsistent, no solution.
--------------
#3 is too confusing. Try to write it using parentheses, or scan it and email it.
