Question 168832: Problem # 1. A Macy's sweater was reduced $30. The sale price was $90. What was the original price?
Problem # 2. Tom bugdets 1/8 of his yearly salary for entertainment. Tom's total entertainment bill for the year is $6,500. What is Tom's yearly salary?
Please help with these problems. I can't figure them out since there are not three figures to work with. I can usually solve for x when there are three figures to work with, but this is throwing me off track.
Thanks,
Ethel

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Problem # 1. A Macy's sweater was reduced $30. The sale price was $90. What was the original price?
Let the original price be "x".
EQUATION:
x - 30 = 90
x = 90+30
x = $120.00

Problem # 2. Tom bugdets 1/8 of his yearly salary for entertainment. Tom's total entertainment bill for the year is $6,500. What is Tom's yearly salary?
Let Tom's yearly salary be "x".
EQUATION:
(1/8)x = 6500
x = 8*6500
x = $52,000.00
