| Question 168755: Hi, I am taking an algebra class online and need help. I do not have the barcode of the book because I print out the chapters given online. anyway here is the problem.I have figured out how to work the problem except for one area.
 4y-5+y+23=6y+20-3y
 5y+18=3y+20
 Ok,I know how to get the 18 and the 3y, but what do I do to get the 5y? On my homework, I can have the MathLab help me with the homework answer for a certain problem, but then I'll need to do another problem to get credit. I'm having a big problem figuring out how to get to the 5y. Can you help? I failed the first class and this is my second time around for this class online.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 4y-5+y+23=6y+20-3y [combine like terms.] [4Y+Y=5Y, 23-5=18, 6Y-3Y=3Y]
 5y+18=3y+20 [subtract 3y from both sides, sibtract 18 from both sides]
 5Y-3Y=20-18 [subtract 3y from 5y, subtract 18 from 20]
 2Y=2 [divide both sides by 2]
 Y=2/2 [reduce the fraction]
 Y=1 ans.
