You can put this solution on YOUR website!
an airplane made a flight of 1600 miles in 5 hours. during the first 3 hours of the trip it had good weather. it then ran into bad weather, which decreased its rate by 75 mph for the rest of the flight. find the rate on each part of the flight.
:
Let s = speed the 1st 3 hrs (good weather)
Then
(s-75) = speed the last two hours
:
Write a distance equation: Dist = time * speed
:
3s + 2(s-75) = 1600
:
3s + 2s - 150 = 1600
:
5s = 1600 + 150
:
5s = 1750
s = 1750%2F5
s = 350 mph in good weather
and
350 - 75 = 275 mph in bad weather
:
:
Check solution find the distance
3(350) = 1050 mi
2(275) = 550 mi
----------------
total = 1600 mi, confirms our sollutions

That wasn't so hard, was it?
