x^3+8x^2+x-42 (long division) mult x+3 by x^2 and get x^3+3x^2 now subtract this from the orginal x^3+8x^2+x-42 leaves us with 5x^2 +x-42 ....now multiply x+3 by 5x and we get 5x^2 +15x....subt this from the 5x^2+x-42 term an we get -14x-42......dividing x+3 into this term and we get -14 which when multiplied out by x+3 gives us -14x-42 meaning we end with 0 and no remainder so our answer is x^2+5x-14 which when multiplied by x+3 gives us the original term This answer can further simplified into (x+7)(x-2).
