Question 164686: The problem is - In 1902, 44 loaves of bread cost the same amount as 1 loaf of bread in 2006. If a loaf of bread in 2006 costs 1.72 more than in 1902, find the cost of a loaf of bread in 1902.
This is how I did the problem - but I don't think it is right.
44/1 = x/1.72

You're almost right
1%2F44 = x%2F1.72; 1.72 buys 44 loaves
Cross multiply
44x = 1.72
x = 1.72%2F44
x = .039 ~ 4 cents per loaf

:
Check it; .04 * 44 = 1.76 ~ 1.72

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let a= cost of loaf in 1902
Let b= cost of loaf in 2006
a%2Fb+=+1%2F44
a+=+b%2F44
b+=+a+%2B+1.72
a+=+%28a+%2B+1.72%29%2F44
44a+=+a+%2B+1.72
43a+=+1.72
a+=+.04
A loaf of bread in 1902 cost $.04
