there were not all those minus signs.
Multiply both sides of the equation by -1
-1%2A%28-6p+-+5%29+=+-1%2A%28-9+%2B+8p%29
6p+%2B+5+=+9+-+8p
Now add 8p to both sides
8p+%2B+6p+%2B+5+=+9+-+8p+%2B+8p
14p+%2B+5+=+9
Subtract 5 from both sides
14p+%2B+5+-+5+=+9+-+5
14p+=+4
Divide both sides by 14
p+=+4%2F14
p+=+2%2F7 answer
