Question 163446: Can you help me solve this problem: A plane that can fly 340 mph in still air can fly 200 miles downwind in the same amount of time that it can fly 140 miles upwind. Find the velocity of the wind.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 200/(340+r)=t
140/(340-r)=t
200/(340+r)=140/(340-r)
140(340+r)=200(340-r)
47,600+140r=68,000-200r
140r+200r=68,000-47,600
340r=20,400
r=20,400/340
r=60 mph is the speed of the wind.
Proof
200/(340+60)=(140/(340-60)
200/400=140/280
1/2=1/2
