Question 163268: Hi there! I am STUCK!!!!!
Lisa bought one calculator and a text book. Her bill including the 7.25% sales tax came out to be $100.58. The text book was five dollars less than twice the price of the calculator.
How much was each item before tax?
I have tried:
T=2c-5 1.0725c+1.0725(2c-5)=100.58
I have tried about six other ways to work this problem out and I can't seem to get it right. Please help before I go nuts!!! ~Melyssa Answer by Earlsdon(6294) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Please...save your sanity!
Let B = the price of the book and C = the price of the calculator (all before sales tax).
1) (B+C)+0.0725(B+C) = $100.58 This is the cost of the book and calculator plus 7.25 sales tax. Yuocan rewrite equation 1) as:
1a) (B+C)(1.0725) = $100.58 Divide both sides by (1.0725) to find the price of the bookplus calculator.
1b) (B+C) = $100.58/1.0725 = $93.78 This is the price of the bookand calculator without sales tax.
From the problem, you know that:
2) B = 2C-$5 The price of the book is $5 less than twice the price of the calculator. Let's substitute this into equation 1b)
1c) (2C-$5)+C = $93.78 Simplify and solve for C
3C-$5 = $93.78 Add $5 to both sides.
3C = $98.78 Divide both sides by 3.
C = $32.93 This is the cost of the calculator before sales tax.
B = 2C-$5 = 2($32.93)-$5 = $65.85-$5 = $60.85
The calculator price before sales tax is $32.93 and the book price before sales tax is $60.85
