This is an example of a direct variation. Other examples are y=x^2 or y=x^3
As x increases y also increases.
An inverse is y=1/x y=1/x^2 or y=1/x^3
As x increases in value y decreases

increase (or decrease) one quantity (by multiplying or dividing)

the other quantity will have to change to maintain the equality

if they change the same way __ direct variation
__ if they change in opposite ways __ inverse variation

y=3x __ if y gets twice as large, then x must get twice as large to maintain the equality
__ direct variation
