Question 162287: Graph the inequality. y > –5
Answer by AnneElliot(1) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! To graph this inequality, you first must graph the corresponding equation,
y = -5. The graph looks like this:
Notice how this line divides the graph into two sections? We need to figure out which section is > -5. To do this, pick a point from each section, let's say (0,-7) and (0,0)and plug them back into the inequality.
For (0,-7), since the y value is -7, our inequality will be -7 > -5. Is this true? NO, so it does NOT satisfy the inequality.
For (0,0), when our y value is 0, the inequality will be 0 > -5. This does satisfy the inequality.
Next, because the point from the top section of the graph works, you need to SHADE IN the upper portion of the graph (the part ABOVE your line, y = -5).
Finally, because the inequality uses > (in words, GREATER THAN) as opposed to greater than or equal to, the line representing y = -5 must be a dashed line to represent that the line is not included. If you have used pencil, you may simply erase parts of the line to make it dashed.
