: In your own words, explain in detail why we can determine which of two fractions is greater by using the cross-multiplying method. What is the rationale behind this method? What are we really doing when we cross-multiply in order to compare fractions?
When we cross multiply we are actually finding a common denominator for both fractions; since both fractions will have the same common denominator, we only have to worry about comparing the numerators we obtained by cross multiplying....
EX:
1/2 and 2/3
3 and 4 so 1/2 < 2/3
look at why:
1/2 and 2/3
(1*3)/(2*3) and (2*2)/(3*2)
3/6 and 4/6
since we are only comparing we can disregard the denominator now because it is the same
so
3 and 4
so
1/2 < 2/3
