Question 161603: Distance is 1200
The Wallaces take a trip by train and plane
The train is going 48 mph and takes 2 hrs longer than the plane
The plane is going 240 mph.
What is the total time of the trip?
I know this is a d=rt problem and I know that the train takes two hours longer. I'm just not sure how to set up the equation and is there two equations since I am solving for the entire time of the trip?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! .
Let x = time traveled by plane
then
2x = time traveled by train
.
Applying distance formula to calculate distance traveled by each:
48(2x) + 240x = 1200
96x + 240x = 1200
336x = 1200
x = 3.57 hours (time traveled by plane)
.
2x = 2(3.57) = 7.14 hours (time traveled by train)
.
total time: 10.71 hours
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Distance is 1200
The Wallaces take a trip by train and plane
The train is going 48 mph and takes 2 hrs longer than the plane
The plane is going 240 mph.
What is the total time of the trip?
-------------------
n = hours on the train
p = hours on the plane
-------------
48n + 240p = 1200
n = p+2
-----------
Sub for n into the 1st eqn
48(p+2) + 240p = 1200
48p+96 + 240p = 1200
288p = 1104
p = 3 5/6 hours
n = 5 5/6 hours
Total time = 9 2/3 hours, or 9 hours 40 mins
