Question 160926: Hi, I can't seem to get the answer for this equation: -x-(13+4x)=-3(5-9x)+2
I have tried doing this and I end up getting x=13/18 but the answer is x=0. I know what I am doing wrong has something to do with the negative numbers on the left side of the equal sign but I don't know how or why you do it in that certain way.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-x-%2813%2B4x%29=-3%285-9x%29%2B2
==============================
Simplify the left side:
-x-13-4x=-3%285-9x%29%2B2
Simplify the right side:
-x-13-4x=-15%2B27x%2B2
Simplify each side some more:
-5x-13=27x-13
Add 5x to each side of the equation:
-13=32x-13
Add 13 to each side of the equation:
32x=0
Divide each side of the equation by 32 and you are done:
highlight%28x=0%29
===============================
You were probably just making a mistake with your signs...look especially at the very first step. The term -%2813%2B4x%29 is really -1%2A%2813%2B4x%29. When you multiply through that -1, you end up with -13-4x.
