Question 160395: A boat is 10 miles from a harbor traveling east at 25 miles per hour. A second boat leaves the harbor traveling east at 35 miles per hour. How long will it take the second boat to catch up to the first boat?
I have used the following formula: 35x=25x+10
10x=10
x=1
I am not sure that the formula is correct. I know that D1=D2, but shouldn't 25 be multiplied by both x and 10? Please help! I am not sure if I am setting the problem up correctly! Answer by KnightOwlTutor(293) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! You set up the problem correctly. Remember Time*Speed=Distance
You Determined that it took 1 hour for the second boat to catch up
Therefore D1=D2 25(1)+10=35(1) 35=35
You got the correct answer!
