: At 10:00 am a car leaves a house at a rate of 60mi/hr. At the same time, another car leaves the same house at a rate of 50mi/hr in the opposite direction. At what time will the car be 330 miles apart? This question is from textbook Algebra 1

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Remember the following eqns:
Baisc eqn: Speed=distance%2Ftime, S=d%2Ft
Also the folowwing eqn we get:
d=d%5B1%5D%2Bd%5B2%5D EQN 1
We are ask for the total time when both cars are 330 miles apart. So,
As per reference to our basic eqn:
t=d%2F%28S%5B1%5D%2BS%5B2%5D%29
t=330mi%2F%2860mi%2Fhr%2B50mi%2Fhr%29=330cross%28mi%29%2F110%28cross%28mi%29%2Fhr%29
t=3hrs, ANSWER
To check, in reference to the basic eqn again:
d%5B1%5D=S%5B1%5D%2At=60mi%2Fcross%28hr%29%2A3cross%28hrs%29=180miles Car 1
d%5B2%5D=S%5B2%5D%2At=50mi%2Fcross%28hr%29%2A3cross%28hrs%29=150miles Car 2
Then as per EQN 1:
d=d%5B1%5D%2Bd%5B2%5D
330mi=180mi%2B150mi
330mi=330mi They are this apart after 3 hours
Thank you,
