: I am a homeschooler and am having trouble with a problem. My teachers manual has the solutions but not the steps used to arrive at the solutions. Normally I am able to show my son the steps, but this equation has me stumped. A detailed explanation would be greatly appreciated, as I can't figure out where I am making my mistake (or mistakes).
The equation: x = y / y+4 solve for y
The solution: y = 4x / 1-x

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Rewriting:
x=y%2F%28y%2B4%29
cross multiply above eqn and becomes system%28y=x%28y%2B4%29%2Cy=xy%2B4x%29
combine terms with variable y ------> y-xy=4x
factor left term -------------------> y%281-x%29=4x
divide both eqns. by 1-x to isolate y on the left:
y%28cross%281-x%29%29%2Fcross%281-x%29=4x%2F%281-x%29
y=4x%2F%281-x%29 -----------------------------> FINAL ANSWER
