Question 159366: A 8 horsepower pump fills a tank in 8 hours. A 3 horsepower pump fills it in 12 hours. Both pumps are turned on and begin to fill the tank. After 4 hours the 8 horsepower pump breaks. How long will it take the 3 horsepower pump to finish? Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! the 8 hp does 1/8 the job in 1 hr.
the 3 hp does 1/12 the job in 1 hr.
4/8 + 4/12 + x/12 =1
12/24 + 8/24 + x/24 =24/24
x=4
4/24=2/12
so it will take 2 more hrs for the 3 hp pump to finish.
