Question 158866: To determine the number of deer in a game preserve, a conservationist catches 727 deer, tags them and lets them loose. Later 540 deer are caught, 180 of them are tagged. How many deer are in the preserve? Answer by ranjithraghuram(4) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let the total deer in the preserve be 'x'
In the first instance 727 are caught and tagged.
So the untagged deer are x-727.-----------I
When 540 were caught in second time 180 were tagged. Which implies (540-180) are untagged.
so totally 360 deer are untagged. ------------II
From the equations I and II, x-727=360. so x=1087.
So the total number of deer in the preserve are 1087.
