One-half of a number is 2 more than 1/4 of the number. Find the number.
Let the number be x.
1/2 times x = 1/4 times x + 2
The above equation can be written like this:
(x/2) = (x/4) + 2
Multiply each term by the LCD, which is 4.
(x/2) times 4 = 2x
(x/4) times 4 = x
2 times 4 = 8
We now have a linear equation:
2x = x + 8
2x - x = 8
x = 8
