Question 158112: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM:
WHAT IS THE EQUATION OF THE SLANT ASYMPTOTE FOR R%28x%29+=+%28x%5E2+-+x+%2B+17%29+%2F+%28x%5E2+%2B+1%29
1. R(x) = x - 1
2. R(x) = 1
3. R(x) = x + 17
4. There is no slant asymptote

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

A rational function has a slant asymptote ONLY when the
degree of the numerator is 1 more than the degree of the
denominator. In this rational function,

R%28x%29+=+%28x%5E2+-+x+%2B+17%29+%2F+%28x%5E2+%2B+1%29,

the degree of the numerator is 2 and the degree of the
denominator is also 2, so there is no slant asymptote.
