You can put this solution on YOUR website! Shannon had five times as many quarters as dimes in her jar. if the total value of the dimes and quarters are equal $16.20, how many of each kind of coin did she have in the jar?
.
Let d = number of dimes in her jar
then from "Shannon had five times as many quarters as dimes" we get
5d = number of quarters in her jar
.
Because the total is $16.20 we get our equation:
.10d + .25(5d) = 16.20
.10d + 1.25d = 16.20
1.35d = 16.20
d = 16.20/1.35
d = 12 (number of dimes)
.
5d = 5*12) = 60 (number of quarters)
