Question 157532: A nurse is reviewing the daily intake an output of a patient consuming a clear diet. The drainage bag denotes a total of 1,000 mL for the past hours. The total intake is:
2 cups of cofee
1 16-oz serving of clear soup
1 pint of water consumed throughout the day
How much is the deficit in milliters?
I'm not sure how to solve this problem! Could someone please help me?
Thanks, MW

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Convert all of the volume measures to a common unit, milliliters.
Then compare the difference.
.
.
First off, 2 cups, 16 oz, and 1 pint are all equivalent measures.
So you only need to do one conversion.
1 cup = 236.6 ml
2 cups = 16 oz = 1 pint = 473.2 ml
.
.
.
Total fluid in = 473.2+473.2+473.2=1419.6 ml=1420 ml
Total fluid out = 1000 ml
Difference = 1420-1000=420 ml
