Question 157280: A train left mooseport travelling west at 50mph. One hour late, another train left mooseport traveling east at 70mph. In how many hours had the first train been traveling when they were 350 miles apart?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Remember: Speed=distance%2Ftime ---> time=dist%2Fspeed ------> eqn 1
distance=speed%2Atime --------------> eqn 2
Train1=T%5B1%5D=50m%2Fhr
Train2=T%5B2%5D=70m%2Fhr
Note: before T[2] started travelling, T[1] has been running for 1 hour and the total distance travelled: via eqn 2,
%2850m%2Fcross%28hr%29%29%281cross%28hr%29%29=50m -------> eqn3
Now, remember eqn 1: we take the total distance travelled minus eqn 3 (50m). Then we add the speed for both in achieving the distance apart:
time=%28350m-50m%29%2F%2850m%2Fhr%2B70m%2Fhr%29
time=300cross%28m%29%2F%28120cross%28m%29%2Fhr%29
time=2.5hrs -----------> it took for T%5B1%5D and T%5B2%5D when 350 miles apart.
For T%5B1%5D -----> 2.5hrs + 1hr(eqn3) =3.5hrs total time travelling.
Thank you,
