You can put this solution on YOUR website!
moving van - rate: 35 mi/hr time: t hr distance traveled: 35t mi
car - rate: 50 mi/hr time: (t - .75) hr dist traveled: 50*(t - .75)mi
When they meet, the distance each has travelled will be the same
d+=+35t
d+=+50%2A%28t+-+.75%29
35t+=+50%2A%28t+-+.75%29
35t+=+50t+-+37.5
15t+=+37.5
t+=+2.5hr (note: this is the time expired from when
the van left until it meets the car)
t+-+.75+=+1.75hr This is the time expired from when the car left
until it meets the van
So, the car will catch up with the van in 1 hr and 45 minutes
check:
d+=+35t
d+=+35%2A2.5
d+=+87.5mi
and
d+=+50%2A%28t+-+.75%29
d+=+50%2A1.75
d+=+87.5mi
OK
