Question 156026: Eleven years ago Hye was four times as old as her brother. In one year she will be twice as old as he is now. What are their ages now? Answer by kdr(11) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! H = Hye's age now
B = Brother's age now
H - 11 = 4(B-11)
H + 1 = 2B
Solve second equation for H:
H = 2B - 1
Substituting for H in first equation:
2B - 1 - 11 = 4(B-11)
2B - 12 = 4B - 44
-12 = 2B - 44
-12 + 44 = 2B
32 = 2B
16 = B
Substituting B=16 in second equation:
H+1 = 2(16)
H+1 = 32
H = 31
Therefore, Hye is now 31 and her brother is 16.
