I'm never sure which place value to round to. I'm uncertain
about setting up problems in terms of which unit goes on top/bottom. And with this particular problem, I knew that 12 inches=1 ft, but I initally tried using the the conversion 36 inches=3ft, which didn't work. How do you know which conversion factor to use? Thanks for your help! MW

The best way to keep track of units is to include them in the calcuations. For example, 3.2 ft = 3.2 ft * 30.48 cm/ft. You can see that there is a foot in the NUM and the DEN, so it cancels, and you get 97.536 cm.
To find the number of seconds in a year, it's
1 yr * 365 days/yr * 24 hr/day * 60 min/hr * 60 sec/min
= 365*24*60*60 (day*hr*min*sec)/(yr*day*hr*min)
= 31,536,000 sec/yr - All units except sec and year cancel, and you can see that they're in the right place.
