Area of outer rectangle: A=x%28x%2B4%29=x%5E2%2B4x

Area of inner rectangle: A=3%2A4=12


Since we only want the area of the shaded region, this means that we're going to simply subtract the area of the inner rectangle from the area of the outer rectangle.

So the area of the shaded region is A=%28x%5E2%2B4x%29-%2812%29=x%5E2%2B4x-12


Note: this may be unnecessary, but x%5E2%2B4x-12 factors to %28x-2%29%28x%2B6%29
