Factor the trinomial using trial and error
2a^2 + 3a + 1

Try integers first. That has options of 1 & 2 for the a terms, and 1 & 1 for the coefficients. Since all 3 terms are positive, there are no negative values involved.
(2a + 1)*(a + 1) = 2a^2 + 3a + 1
That's it.
