In a walkathon to raise money for charity, Elisa walked a certain distance at 5 mi/h and then jogged twice that distance at 8 mi/h. Her total time walking and jogging was 2 h and 15 min. How many miles long was the walkathon? (hint: time=distance over rate.) This question is from textbook Algebra and Trigonometry Structure and Method book 2

Let x be the distance she walked,
then the distance she jogged is 2x.
The time walking was x%2F5
The time jogging was 2x%2F8
The total time is x%2F5%2B%282x%29%2F8
As the total time is 2 hours and 15 minutes, we have
x%2F5%2B%282x%29%2F8=2%2B1%2F4
Solving for x, we have
x%2F5%2Bx%2F4=9%2F4
20%28x%2F5%2Bx%2F4%29=20%2A%289%2F4%29 (multiply both sides by 20)
4x%2B5x=45
9x+=+45
x=5
So
the distance she walked is 5 miles
the distance she jogged is 10 miles.

" Elisa walked a certain distance at 5 mi/h" __ Tw=d/5

"then jogged twice that distance at 8 mi/h" __ Tj=2d/8=d/4

total distance equals d+2d or 3d __ total time equals 2h and 15 min or 9/4 h

Tw+Tj=9/4 __ substituting __ (d/5)+(d/4)=9/4 __ multiplying by 20 __ 4d+5d=45 __ 9d=45 __ dividing by 9 __ d=5

total distance equals 3*(5) or 15 mi
