: A 2000 Liter tank containing 550 Liters of water is being filled with water at the rate of 75 Liters per minute from a full 1600 Liter tank. How long will it be before the two tanks have the same amount of water? This question is from textbook Algebra-Structure and Method
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Suppose it takes x minutes for the two tanks to have the same amount of water.
As each minute 75 L of water was poured into the first tank from the second one.
At the end of x minutes, The amount of water in the first tank is
550 + 75x
The amount of water in the second tank is
1600 - 75x
Setting them equal, we have
550 + 75x = 1600 - 75x
Solving for x, we obtain:
150x = 1050
x = 7
So at the end of 7 minutes, the two tanks have the same amount of water.
