The average is the sum of all of the scores divided by the total number of scores.
Let call his final grade X.
The average would then be,
A=%2884%2B86%2B71%2B91%2B98%2BX%29%2F6
The average is divided by 6 because there would be 6 scores after the final.
Set the average equal to 82 and solve for X.
A=%2884%2B86%2B71%2B91%2B98%2BX%29%2F6=82
84%2B86%2B71%2B91%2B98%2BX=492
430%2BX=492
X=62
He needs to score at least a 62 to average out to an 82.
