Question 148284: A student mixes distilled water with a 90% solution of acid to produce a 50% solution. If 5 liters of water is used how much 50% solution is produced?
I know the answer is 11.25 but I am unable to figure out how they got to that answer.
I have tried setting water as x and 5 then acid as 90% and solution as 50% but any way I try does not get to the answer.
Help please!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A student mixes distilled water with a 90% solution of acid to produce a 50% solution. If 5 liters of water is used how much 50% solution is produced?
--------------------------
Your equation should track the water OR track the acid.
----------------
Water EQUATION: 5 + 0.10x = 0.50(5+x)
5+0.10x = 2.5+0.5x
0.4x = 2.5
x = 6.25 liters of 50% solution
-------------------------------------
Acid EQUATION:
0*5 + 0.9x = 0.50(5+x)
0.9x = 2.5 + 0.5x
0.4x = 2.5
x = 6.25 liters of 50% solution
--------------------------------------
You don't have to do both; one or the other.
