| Question 147267: THE ANSWER OF THIS PROBLEM IS 4/3 ACCORDING MY ANSWER SHEET BUT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO GET THIS PLEASE HELP ME.A Distillate flows into an empty 64-Gallon drum at spout A and out of the drum at spout B.If the rate of flow through A is 2 gallons per hour,how many gallons per hour must flow out at spout B so that the drum is full in exactly 96 hours?: A Distillate flows into an empty 64-Gallon drum at spout A and out of the drum at spout B.If the rate of flow through A is 2 gallons per hour,how many gallons per hour must flow out at spout B so that the drum is full in exactly 96 hours?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x=required rate of flow out of the drum Then 2-x=net rate of flow into the drum (rate of flow in - rate of flow out)
 So, our equation to solve is:
 (2-x)*96=64 or
 192-96x=64
 -96x=-192+64
 -96x=-128
 x= 1/1/3  or 4/3 gal/hr
 CK
 2-4/3=2/3 gal/hr --net rate of flow into the drum
 So, 2/3 * 96=64
 64=64

 Hope this helps---ptaylor
