A company recently downsized its number of employees by 35%. if there are still 78 employees, how many employees wre there prior to the layoffs?
.
Let x = number of employees before layoffs
then
x - .35x = 78
x(1-.35) = 78
x(.65) = 78
x = 78/.65
x = 120

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the number of employees prior to layoffs = n
In words,
(number of employees left) + (35% of employees prior to layoffs) =
number of employees prior to layoffs
78+%2B+.35n+=+n
.65n+=+78
n+=+120
There were 120 employees prior to layoffs
