and now, you added a fifth (say x):
82,85,78,88 and x
then the average would be:
(82+85+78+88+x)/5
The problem wanted average to be 85 so now you have:
(82+85+78+88+x)/5 = 85
(333+x)/5 = 85
333+x = 425
x = 92
