Question 146957: Hello I'm having a problem with one of my question on operations on functions. I will greatly appreciated if you help me out. The question is, "Find (f+g)(x), (f*g)(x), (f-g)(x), and (f/g)(x) for f(x)=8x^2 and g(x)=1/x^2. The exponent 2 on the value x is confusing me and I don't know what to do. Thank you.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
f%28x%29=8x%5E2
g%28x%29=1%2Fx%5E2
The exponent 2 just means multiply twice,
8x%5E2=8%2Ax%2Ax
It's just shorthand to keep the equations more manageable.
Don't let that distract you.
Also, remember that
1%2Fx%5E2=x%5E-2
Now we can start,
f%2Bg=8x%5E2%2B1%2Fx%5E2
f%2Ag=8x%5E2%2A%281%2Fx%5E2%29=8x%5E2%2Ax%5E%28-2%29=8x%5E%282-2%29=8
f-g=8x%5E2-1%2Fx%5E2
f%2Fg=8x%5E2%2F%281%2Fx%5E2%29=8x%5E2%2Ax%5E2=8x%5E4
