: 26. In my book, they give you the odd answers but when I worked through problem 25, I got the answer wrong no matter how many times I tried to work it. It is 2x-1/8-1=x+5/7. I did 56(2x-1/8)-1=56(x+5/7),then 7(2x-1)-1=8(x+5), then 14x-7-1=8x+40-8x+7+1, then 14x-8x=48, then 6x=48 and x=8. WRONG! The book said the answer is 103/6!!! I am so sorry to bother you. I am a 47 year old disabled vet who has never had algebra in her life. I go to one class a month (McKendree University) and have completed 18 months of A's in every class. I work on these problems for 6-7 hours at a time until I finally comprehend them. I know something is very wrong when no matter how hard I try, I can't come up with the actual answer. If you could show me where I went wrong and would forever be in your debt. Thank you in advance for putting up with an adult student that just can't seem to get even the simplest of problems. You can put this solution on YOUR website! To solve equations like these you should start by grouping the like numbers together, instead of jumping straight away to get a solution. try and follow the steps below :
2x - 1/8 - 1 = x + 5/7
Grouping the x's on one side will give you
2x-x = 5/7 + 1/8 + 1
x = (40 + 7 + 56 )/56
x = 103/56
I hope that is the correct answer and you have understood how to get it.
