A merchant has coffee worth $2 a pound that she wishes to mix with 8 pounds of coffee worth $8 a pound to get a mixture that can be sold for $3 a pound. How many pounds of the $2 coffee should be used?

2x+8*8=3(8+x)
2x+64=24+3x
2x-3x=24-64
-x=-40
x=40 pounds of $2 coffee is needed.
proof:
2*40+64=3(8+40)
80+64=3*48
144=144
