Question 143135: I'm stuck with this word problem, any help toward solving this system of linear equations would be appreciated. Thank you.
An express and local train leave GraysLake at 3 P.M. and head for Chicago 50 miles away. The express travels twice as fast as the local and arrives 1 hour ahead of the local. Find the speed of each train.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x="local speed", so 2x="express speed"

r*t=d __ t=d/r __ "arrives 1 hour ahead of the local"

50/x=(50/2x)+1 __ multiplying by 2x __ 100=50+2x __ 50=2x __ 25=x
