When you say that the answer is 3, this means that x = 3 is a solution, and since you have a quadratic equation, there must be two solutions.
So the two solutions are:
x = 3 and x = 3
The solutions of x = 3 mean that the parablola (the curve generated by the quadratic equation when graphed) intersects the x-axis at x = 3.
But, because the two solutions are identical, the parabola does not actually cross the x-axis, it merely touches the x-axis at the point x = 3.
To find the generating equation, take the x = 3 and subtract 3 from both sides to get:
(x-3) = 0 and (x-3) = 0 These are factors of the equation, so you would multiply these factors together to find the generating equation.
