| Question 142621: Could you please help me with a few problems, that I'm having trouble with? Thank you for your time in advance.
Find the zero of the linear function is what it says.
 1) f(x)= x + 5
 2) f(x) = -x + 18
 3) f(x) = 16 - x
 4) f(x) = x - 6
Thanks again for people like you. Elle J

You can put this solution on YOUR website! A zero of a function is the value of the independent variable ( in these cases) that makes .
I suspect you may be having some difficulty with function notation, so here is a little tutorial:

, , , and the like are used to represent functions. means "the value of the function at " So for your first example, , , , , and so on. Furthermore, if , then is a zero of the function. Your job is to find that value of for each of your functions so that .
The process is to set the function statement equal to zero and then solve for the variable, thus (for your problem 1):

 Add
  to both sides:

 So, if
then , therefore is a zero of
Using this method, you should be able to handle the other three problems.
