Question 140967: Hey can you pleaseee help me !
How much money would you save in a year if you put a penny away the first day of the year, two pennies the 2nd day, 3 on the third and so on.
(There is supposed to be an algebraic equation to find it, but I can't figure out the equation)
Thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If you were to save 1 penny on the first day of the yesr then 2 pennies on the second day, etc, for one year, your total, S, would be:
S+=+1%2B2%2B3%2B4%2B...%2B365 This is called an "Arithmetic series"
The total, S, is called the partial sum and is given by:
S%5Bn%5D+=+%28n%2F2%29%28a%5B1%5D%2Ba%5Bn%5D%29 where: n = the number of terms in the series (that's 365 in this problem), a%5B1%5D is the first term (that's 1 here) and a%5Bn%5D is the nth term and that is a%5B365%5D+=+365. So...
S+=+%28365%2F2%29%281%2B365%29
S+=+%28365%2F2%29%28366%29
S+=+65148 Pennies. To convert to dollars, divide by 100.
S+=+651.48 dollars.
S = $651.48
