I don't think it can be done without either logarithms or a calculator!! That is why John Napier came up with logarithms. Are you in Calculus? There are probably some numerical methods, like Newton's Method, but it has been too long since I taught that to advise you. Why don't you re-post the question, and maybe someone will give you a suggestion from higher mathematics.
